An Atlas of Mirrors
On the 18th of February, the Drama, Art, and Music Elective students visited the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) to attend the Singapore Biennale, titled An Atlas of Mirrors. We were first introduced to the artist Melissa Tan, who gave us a sharing about her artwork.
She said: “If you can dream a better world you can make a better world or perhaps travel between them”. It was composed with meticulously-cut paper, the patterns of which were indents formed by rocks she had found across Singapore, thus recording the ‘music’ of our built and natural environment.
We were then grouped with students from different electives, and allowed to roam SAM and 8Q to gather ideas for a collaborative project. At the end of the excursion, artist Zulkifle Mahmod explained to us the concept of his auditory installation called “SONICreflection”. It recorded the ambience of relatively unknown sub-communities in Singapore; for example, he had recorded the ambience of Thai-based congregations in Golden Mile Complex.
Not only did we enjoy the opportunity to interact with like-minded people from different disciplines, but we were also encouraged to explore our capacities as students of the arts. With this enhanced appreciation of art, we have been better equipped to excel in our respective specialties.
