Titoudao: Drama Elective Programme field trip

“Wayang sure die when we die”- Ah Chiam said, her forced laughter that followed barely veils the discreet wistfulness in her shaking voice.

That is one of many poignant moments in ‘Titoudao/ 剃头刀’ – a play based on the true story of Madam Oon Ah Chiam’s life and her unfaltering passion for Wayang, which has touched the hearts of many amongst the audience, including the 2016 batch of DEP students who were privileged enough to be able to attend the awe-inspiring performance on Wednesday, March 11 2015 at National Library Board’s Drama Centre.

With authentic Wayang makeup, costumes and Chinese percussion instruments, ‘Titoudao’ treated the audience to a night of truthful recreation of sights and sounds of classic Wayang scenes, resurrecting the glory of Chinese street opera in the 2-hour performance.

However, what really tugged at the heartstrings was the emblematic idealism of performers in the 50s and 60s.  Whole-heartedly devoting themselves to honing their craft, they are indeed an inspiration for young actors and actresses like us to put our hearts and souls into our work, in the pursuit of greater heights. We are grateful to the school and our teachers-in-charge, Mrs Geetha Creffield and Mr Joel Chin for giving us this precious opportunity to learn and be inspired.

Truly, to God be the Glory, the Best is yet to be.
